During both world wars the Australian Government established badges for issue to the nearest female relative of a member of the Australian forces who was on active service. The Australian Imperial Forces badge was announced in 1917 for issue to the nearest female relative of soldiers, airmen, nurses, masseurs and masseuses who left Australia for active service abroad. A single badge was issued to the relative but could represent multiple serving family members, each of whom would be signified by a separate silver bar suspended below.
