100 Years of Australian Submarines
Celebrating 100 years of Australian Submarines
CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF AUSTRALIAN SUBMARINES
For more than 100 years submarines have been a proud part of the Royal
Australian Navy. The first boats, the E Class AE1 and AE2,
joined the fleet in 1914 just before the outbreak of the First World
War. These were followed by the J and O Class boats.
In the 1960s the Oberon Class diesel-electric submarine continued this
pride. From 1967 until 2000, the six Scottish-built Oberon Class boats
proved to be extremely capable vessels, renowned for their ability to
operate for long periods and remain virtually undetectable. During the
Cold War years these boats and crews delivered Australia's strategic
policy of forward defence.
The first Australian built submarine, the diesel-electric Collins Class, entered Navy in 1996. The Collins Class, which despite a number of developmental issues, has proved itself one of the world's most effective conventional submarines. The Collins Class is the first Australian submarine to carry female crew. The Class is scheduled to serve until 2025.
