The Spirit of the ANZACs Collections

ordinary people, extraordinary service

The Spirit of the ANZACs collections aim to provide a contemporary context to the values and strengths associated with our first diggers. These beautiful products actively support and promote what can be characterised as the core Anzac Spirit values:

  • Courage
  • Mateship
  • Loyalty
  • Honour
  • Remembrance

Our collections provide valuable funding for hundreds of non-for-profit organisations and support and nurture educational, inspirational, and or remembrance outcomes linked to military service and history. Our overarching objective is to encourage Australians to remember and honour the original Anzacs and the men and women who served Australia, at home and abroad, in the years that followed.

Alec Campbell, the last Australian ANZAC

Preserving the Anzac Spirit - Genesis

The Spirit of Anzac collections fulfil the wishes of Australia's last Gallipoli digger, Alec Campbell. In 2002 Alec met with Stephen Davie, whose company BrandNet was involved in a commemorative program to support the 100th Anniversary of the Australian Army, and in the course of discussion at Alec's home, Alec urged upon Stephen the need for the community to "preserve and continue the Anzac Spirit". BrandNet, through its subsidiaries Military Shop, Army Shop, Air Force Shop and Navy Shop, have proudly been carrying out Alec's wishes by producing beautiful products that help Australians connect and celebrate our rich military history and traditions. Please enjoy this page and feel comfort in knowing that BrandNet has the honour and privilege in working with and operating services on behalf of the Australian Army, The Royal Australian Air Force and the Royal Australian Navy. Army, Navy and Air Force Anzac Hat Badges

Australian Army Rising Sun Hat Badges

Since its inception in 1902 as a general service badge for the Australian contingents serving in the Boer War, the Rising Sun badge has undergone seven iterations. Each evolution represents the changing structure of service and Australia's political maturity.

Proudly worn by soldiers of the 1st and 2nd Australian Imperial Forces in both World Wars (WW1 and WW2), the 'Rising Sun' badge has become an integral part of Digger tradition. The distinctive shape, worn on the upturned brim of a slouch hat, is readily identified with the spirit of the ANAZCs. Yet despite the badge's historic significance, well-researched theories as to its origins are more numerous than its seven points.

In 1902 a badge was urgently sought for the Australian contingents raised after Federation for service in South Africa during the Boer War. Probably the most widely accepted version of the origin of this badge is that which attributes the selection of its design to a British officer, Major General Sir Edward Hutton, the newly appointed Commander-in-chief of the Australian Forces. He had earlier received a gift from Brigadier General Joseph Gordon, a military acquaintance of long-standing, a "Trophy of Arms" comprising mounted cut and thrust swords and triangular Martini Henri bayonets arranged in a semicircle around a brass crown. To Major General Hutton the shield was symbolic of the coordination of the Naval and Military Forces of the Commonwealth.

The refurbished trophy is on display in the main foyer of Army Headquarters in Canberra.
