Description
This medallion is especially minted to remember the Royal Australian Navy at the outset of the War in the Pacific. Between 1939 and 1941 much of Navy's focus was far from Australia, but with Japan's declaration of war in December 1941 Navy called her biggest ships back to protect Australian and to fight the Imperial Japanese Navy War. Her biggest, HMAS Canberra, was lost off Guadalcanal (Solomon Islands) in a surprise attack by a powerful Japanese naval force in an action that became known as the Battle of Savo Island. Whereas in the First World War the R.A.N. lost two vessels, HMA Submarines AE1 and AE2, in the Second World War more than 30 vessels and almost 2,200 men and women were lost. The medallion measures 50mm in diameter and 4.5mm in thickness. Only 500 medallions will be struck. The medallion is presented in a quality leatherette presentation box and includes a numbered Limited Edition Certificate of Authenticity. A very rare collectable.
