National Day for War Animals
The National Day for War Animals was held on the 24th of February. This year, a number of events occurred around Australia and overseas to mark this important date. From the event held at Hervey Bay by the Australian Light Horse Association and the Hervey Bay RSL, to overseas events, National War Animal Day was commemorated by many to remember our most loyal companions.
The important work of the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation (AWAMO) has seen this day officially recognised in Australia since 2019. Over the years, February 24th has become more recognised globally.
This year, the Air Force Museum of New Zealand unveiled a permanent memorial to all pets, mascots, and war animals of the Air Force. The plaque was unveiled in the Memorial Courtyard of the museum, where it will remain to commemorate these loyal companions. The presentation took place on February 24th to commemorate all war and service animals, with members from the New Zealand Defence Force present alongside some current four-legged members.

The amazing work of groups pushing for more commemoration of these brave animals, including AWAMO, continues to help spread the story of bravery, and you can help too!
For many, the most familiar commemorative symbol is the red poppy, honouring those who have served and continue to do so. The purple poppy honours the war animals who have served bravely and without complaint alongside our defence forces in past conflicts and today. It recognises the extraordinary loyalty and courage of all war animals and represents a commitment to continuing to honour and remember their service. This year, consider wearing a purple poppy on Anzac Day and show your support for the animals that bravely serve alongside us.
With sensational purple poppy products that help support the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation, you can become an everyday ambassador and help raise awareness of the important work of AWAMO and the honouring of all service animals.
