Image:  It wasn’t uncommon for Europeans to train and sometimes even command the troops of second-rank powers, but von Sanders’ mission far exceeded the usual scope of these arrangements.

Q.   Who was Otto Liman von Sanders?
A.   Otto Liman von Sanders was a Prussian general who was appointed head of the German military mission in Turkey in 1913. In March 1915 he was appointed commander of the Ottoman 5th Army at Gallipoli and was thus the overall enemy military commander at Gallipoli. Unfortunately for von Sanders, his appointment was a dual political-military one and his political responsibilities heavily impacted on his military duties and thus most of the day to day running of the Gallipoli Campaign was undertaken by a group of talented Ottoman officers.
