Q.   Who was "Birdy"?
A.   Lieutenant General (later Field Marshal) Sir William Riddell Birdwood, a professional British Army officer, was appointed in December 1914 to form the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and command the corps in action at Gallipoli. Birdwood later commanded I ANZAC Corps and then, for a short period, the Australian Corps on the Western Front.
