Formerly known as the Air Force Achievement Medal, the US Air and Space Achievement Medal is awarded to Air Force personnel for exceptional achievement or meritorious service specifically benefiting the Air Force. The medal can also be awarded for acts of bravery that fall short of the criteria for the Air Force Commendation Medal (AFCM).
Design
The medal features a unique outer border made up of 11 cloud-like shapes. On the front is a design of crossed thunderbolts and spread wings. This design is adapted from the Seal of the Air Force. On the reverse side "Air Force Meritorious Achievement" is inscribed.
Ribbon
The accompanying silk ribbon is characterized by three groups of four vertical stripes of dark blue, set against a silver-grey background.
If you order your medal unmounted, the medal and ribbon will be supplied as separate components. Miniature medals will be supplied with 15cm of ribbon and full size medals will be supplied with 30cm of ribbon.
The court mounting of medals involves securing medals to a stiff backing board, along with the placement of a brooch fitting on the board. This ensures that the medals remain firmly in place and do not shift or move about while being worn.
