There has been an increase in the number of medals stolen during burglaries and house break-ins in Australia. Because police do not keep separate statistics specifically related to medal theft, it is difficult to determine the exact number of military medals stolen annually. However, the growing number of media reports highlight the extent of this problem.

Manager of the Military Shop, Mahdi Shanyar explains that: “The increasing popularity of events such as ANZAC Day parades has meant that the general public has become more aware of the significance and value of military medals. Unfortunately, the criminal elements in society have also taken notice and are targeting medals because of their value”. He suggests the following tips to keep your medals out of criminal hands:

1. Keeping original medals out of sight when stored is a good idea. It is also wise to keep medals separate from your jewellery, since it is a priority target for burglars and thieves. Original medals should ideally be kept in a safe or vault.

2. Ensure that you have a comprehensive visual record of your medals. Take detailed pictures of the medals, including names and service number on the rim or reverse of the medal. Also be sure to document any damage or distinguishing marks or blemishes on the medal. This will assist the police in identifying your property in the event of recovery, even if the medals were issued unnamed.

3. A good quality medal case will solve most of your storage needs. Look for cases that close snugly, are solid enough to withstand bumps and blows, and also offer additional storage compartments for loose lengths of ribbons, clasps, badges or miniature medals.

4. Mahdi’s top tip for keeping your medals safe: “Have replica sets of your medals made up. Keep the original medals in a safe place and use the replicas for display or for marching on ANZAC Day”.

The Military Shop offers a professional medal mounting service and is able to provide replicas of your original sets. Visit the Military Shop website for current promotions or contact Mahdi and his team of medal experts.
