Vice Admiral David Johnston, The New Chief of the Defence Force
In a significant announcement made by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles, Vice Admiral David Johnston has been recommended to succeed General Angus Campbell as Chief of the Defence Force, effective from July. This nomination marks a pivotal moment in the leadership of the Australian Defence Force (ADF), subject to final consideration and approval by the Governor-General.
Who is Vice Admiral David Johnston?
Vice Admiral Johnston, a seasoned veteran with a career spanning over four decades since joining the ADF in 1978, has served as Vice Chief of the Defence Force since 2018. His extensive experience and proven leadership make him the ideal candidate to assume the reins of the ADF.
General Campbell, whose distinguished service to the nation began in 1981, will pass on the baton to Vice Admiral Johnston, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and commitment to duty.
In addition to this transition, Air Marshal Robert Chipman is set to assume the role of Vice Chief of the Defence Force, while Air Vice-Marshal Stephen Chappell will ascend to the position of Chief of Air Force upon promotion.
Prime Minister Albanese Foresees Cohesive Future
Expressing anticipation for the collaboration ahead, Prime Minister Albanese highlighted the collective efforts to forge a more cohesive and focused Defence Force under the new leadership. He extended gratitude to General Campbell for his unwavering dedication throughout his tenure, which spanned a period of significant strategic evolution and cultural transformation within the ADF.
Deputy Prime Minister Marles echoed these sentiments, recognising General Campbell's pivotal role in navigating complex changes and realigning military priorities towards the Indo-Pacific region. His advocacy for operational accountability, alliance reinforcement, and ADF personnel welfare has been instrumental in shaping the force's trajectory.
A New Era in ADF Command
The announcement also heralds several other senior command changes within the ADF, including Rear Admiral Justin Jones assuming the role of Chief of Joint Operations and Major General Susan Coyle appointed as Chief of Joint Capabilities. Additionally, Lieutenant General Gavan Reynolds will conclude his tenure as the inaugural Chief of Defence Intelligence, marking the end of an era in intelligence leadership within the ADF.
As the ADF prepares for a new chapter under the stewardship of Vice Admiral Johnston, these leadership transitions signify a commitment to adaptability, innovation, and readiness in safeguarding Australia's national interests.
