First Western Front Memorial for War Animals
When we think of losses during the Great War many think in terms of the human cost. But what of the millions of animal that served alongside humans – the horses, dogs, birds, camels, mules and more. Without them there is no doubt more human lives would have been lost.
The Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation (AWAMO) recently opened the first war animal memorial on the Western Front to recognise animals from all nations that were involved in the Great War.
The memorial is at Pozieres, which in 1916 was the scene of some of the most bitter and costly fighting for Australian troops in the war.
According to AWAMO organiser Nigel Allsopp something like 9 million serving animals perished or were wounded in the Great War.
Nigel says we should never forget that not only two legged but four legged diggers served this nation and still continue to do so today. “These animals have demonstrated true valour and an enduring partnership with humans and they will now be honoured with this beautiful new memorial.
The memorial was designed by Nigel who wanted it to remember all animals, regardless of side they served on. To support projects like the animal memorial the AWAMO receives funds from the sales of purple poppy products.
