Q.   What was an "Anzac Wafer"?
A.   The hard square biscuits issued by the army were called "Anzac Wafers" or "Anzac Tiles" by the men who had to eat them. The biscuits were baked very hard to ensure a long shelf life, however, their hardness caused health issues. Some men broke their teeth or their dentures on the biscuits, while others suffered gum, lip and mouth infections from cuts caused by hard biscuit fragments.
