Q.   How did they dispose of rubbish?
A.   In the early days of the campaign most men simply threw rubbish, especially food scraps out of the trench. This was ordered to stop in late May 1915, however, as the rubbish was drawing hoards of flies. Rubbish was then either buried in specially dug rubbish pits or, when possible, burnt.
