The first pattern – February 1902
This 25mm-wide lapel pin draws inspiration from the first pattern Rising Sun badge, originally created for Australian contingents serving in the Second Boer War.
The design was based on the “Trophy of Arms” presented by Major Gordon to Major General Sir Edward Hutton, featuring mounted cut-and-thrust swords and triangular Martini-Henry bayonets arranged in a semi-circle around the Crown. To Hutton, this striking emblem symbolised the cooperation and unity between the naval and military forces of the Empire, reflecting a shared commitment to defence.
Rich in military heritage, this finely detailed lapel pin offers a meaningful way to recognise the origins of one of Australia’s most enduring military symbols.
