The 3rd Field Ambulance Unit served bravely at Gallipoli rescuing and treating soldiers wounded during the intense fighting at ANZAC Cove.
A father and son from Tasmania volunteered to serve in this distinguished unit.
Private F.H. Ransley was the only child of William and Annie Ransley. He enlisted with his father in the 3rd Field Ambulance and served at Gallipoli. His uncle, Major C.E. Leer was killed in action there.
Ransley also served on the Western Front and was killed in action at Passchendaele on 13 October 1917. His father and mother were devastated at the loss of their only child.
His father, William, survived the war but later was killed in a motor car accident in 1930. That left his wife Annie, a widow and childless.
With a grant of $9,960 from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Launceston Legacy has published a book about the Tasmanian members of the 3rd Field Ambulance who served at Gallipoli. The book seeks to highlight the contributions made by Launceston and other parts of Tasmania during the Gallipoli Campaign.
