Proudly Supporting the 2017 Veterans Film Festival

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel Dan Tehan said Defence was proud to support the 2017 Veterans’ Film Festival in Canberra from 18 to 22 October 2017.

Now in its third year, the festival features films about war and conflict from around the world including dramas, comedies, animations and documentaries.

Mr Tehan said the diverse range of films explored the complexity of war and the stories of those who have served.

“The Veterans’ Film Festival brings the stories of current service military personnel, veterans, their families and communities to life,” Mr Tehan said.

“The movies can help Australians understand the nature of military service, the experiences of our Defence personnel and the impacts of conflict.

“Defence has partnered with the 2017 Veterans’ Film Festival to encourage more people to attend this year’s event.”

Mr Tehan said a number of screenings and the Red Poppy Award would be held at the Adams Auditorium at the Australian Defence Force Academy.

Vice Chief of the Defence Force Vice Admiral Ray Griggs said it was a natural fit for Defence to partner with the Festival in 2017.

“The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has a rich history and our identity today has been shaped by more than a century’s worth of stories about courage, sacrifice and selflessness,” VADM Griggs said.

“Film is a powerful way to remind people of the costs that war has had on our society, and this Festival is a unique way to honour those who have served and all others who have been impacted by conflict.

“This partnership represents the ADF’s strong commitment to present the diverse stories of our people and help the public better understand the struggles and successes of veterans and their families.”

Festival Director Tom Papas said this year’s program was both thought-provoking and highly entertaining.

“From World War II dramas, to an animated oral history, and stories about those returning home from more contemporary conflicts – there is something for everyone,” Mr Papas said.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with Defence in 2017.”
