Spanning over a century, Maree Kemps’ family's deep-rooted connection to the Australian Defence Force tells a powerful story of duty, sacrifice, and pride.

Her family’s military history dates back to World War I and extends through World War II and Vietnam. Her father served in the Army Reserves during World War II, while her uncle took to the skies with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). Maree’s mother also made her mark, enlisting in the Women’s Royal Australian Air Force (WRAAF) in the 1950s. However, the family’s service also came with loss, her mother’s brother tragically lost his life in the Philippines while serving in the Australian Navy during World War II.

Maree herself continued the family legacy by joining the RAAF, where she earned a unique distinction, becoming the only female tailor to serve in Malaysia. Her husband also served in the RAAF, reinforcing their family’s unwavering commitment to the country.

But the tradition didn’t stop there. All four of Maree’s children have followed in their parents' footsteps, taking up the mantle of service. Her eldest son, is a professional cyclist. Her second son serves as a submariner in the Royal Australian Navy, while her daughter served in the RAAF. Her youngest son joined the Army, completing two overseas tours, one in Afghanistan and another during the reopening of Iraq.

For families like Maree’s, military service is more than a duty, it’s a legacy. Many choose to honour that legacy with commemorative medallions, and memorabilia that celebrate their family's service. Whether it’s a custom-framed medal display or a plaque these pieces help preserve the stories of service for generations to come.

Maree’s story is a remarkable testament to the strength of military families and the generations who dedicate their lives to protecting Australia. From the trenches of World War I to modern-day deployments, her family’s legacy stands as an inspiration to all who serve.
