Cameron Baird was born in Burnie, Tasmania, on 7 June 1981. He joined the Australian Regular Army in January 2000 and served in East Timor, Iraq, and Afghanistan. On his second operational tour in Afghanistan in 2007, Baird was awarded the Medal of Gallantry. On his fourth tour in 2013, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery in the Ghawchak, Uruzgan province battle.

Baird led his team in silencing several enemy positions under heavy small-arms fire. He then went to the aid of another team whose commander had been seriously wounded. With selfless disregard for his safety, Baird drew fire from an enemy machine-gun position, allowing his team to regain the initiative. He charged the enemy's position three times to draw fire away from his team, ultimately costing him his life.

7 June 1981 – 22 June 2013, Cameron Baird is Australia's 100th recipient of the Victoria Cross

Cameron Baird was an exceptionally modest man who spent significant time supporting organisations raising money for soldier welfare on home soil. In an interview, Doug Baird, Cam's father, said, "It's easy for a parent to say my son, my daughter, was the greatest on earth, but Cameron was as close to perfect as you could get".
