A media release by The Hon Matt Keogh MP, Minister for Veterans' Affairs and Minister for Defence Personnel on 20 September 2024

As Australia marks the 25th anniversary of its involvement in Timor-Leste, we take this moment to honour the nation's commitment to international peacekeeping and the legacy it has built over the years.

In 1999, the people of Timor-Leste took a bold step toward independence by voting for their freedom. When they sought the help of the international community to stabilise their nation, Australia was among the first to respond. The United Nations Assistance Mission to East Timor (UNAMET), which included Australian military and civilian police personnel, oversaw the historic referendum.

Following the vote, unrest broke out, leading to the deployment of approximately 5,500 Australian service personnel as part of the International Force East Timor (INTERFET). This was Australia’s largest military operation since the Vietnam War. Alongside almost 5,000 troops from 22 other nations, INTERFET played a key role in restoring peace and stability to the region. Subsequent peacekeeping missions continued this vital work.

Australia’s contribution wasn’t limited to the Defence Force. Australian Federal Police, the Australian Electoral Commission, Customs officers, and other government agencies all played essential roles in supporting Timor-Leste’s path to independence.

We pay our deepest respects to the six Australians who made the ultimate sacrifice during these missions. Their dedication and courage will always be remembered.

Over the last 25 years, many Australians who served in Timor-Leste have continued to return, building lasting bonds and helping to develop local communities. We also recognise the enduring resilience of the Timorese people and the strong friendship between our two nations.

As commemorative services are held across Australia, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all who have served and continue to serve in this vital peacekeeping mission.
