2 RAR has been involved in some of Australia's most significant engagements, including the Occupation of Japan, the Korean War, the Malayan Emergency and the Vietnam War. Such an illustrious history is worthy of preservation, and that is the goal of the 2 RAR Historical Collection. The collection is housed in a purpose built museum located at Lavarack Barracks, Townsville. The purpose of the 2 RAR Historical Collection is to preserve and exhibit the history and heritage of the battalion, in order for all its members, especially newer members, to understand the legacy of the Unit and the Regiment. The collection encompasses a growing selection of curated artefacts related to the Battalion's history. The museum was recently involved in the creation of a new cold-cast bronze figurine depicting an Australian infantryman during Operation Slipper.

The museum relies on donations to fund its collection and activities, and is staffed by dedicated former Battalion members on a voluntary basis. The majority of ex-Battalion volunteers are medically discharged or disability pensioners, who are all fighting their own battles with physical and mental health. Through volunteering at the museum, they are able to interact with their old Unit in a positive way through meaningful engagement with members of the Battalion.

Recently, the 2 RAR Historical Collection received a generous donation from former Battalion member, Robert Douma. Robert is an artist and proprietor of Death Proof Tattoos in Townsville. In 2018, he was awarded the Napier Waller Art Prize for his work Green on Blue: The Betrayal of Trust. The prize is awarded by the Australian War Memorial and the University of Canberra, and aims to promote artistic excellence and the healing potential of art, while raising a broader awareness of the military experience and the impact of service on the individual. Read more about Green on Blue.

Rob has donated a signed and framed limited edition print of Green on Blue, which will auctioned to raise funds for the 2 RAR Historical Collection. The piece will be sold through an online auction managed by the museum curator, Jason Harrison. To view the current leading bid, visit the 2 RAR Historical Collection Facebook page.

Green on Blue: The Betrayal of Trust depicts the moment of a "green on blue" attack, during which an Afghan soldier turned on his Australian instructors in 2014.
