AUSTRALIAN MEDALS
of the Second World War
More than 993,000 Australians served in the armed forces during World War II, between the declaration of war on Germany on 3 September 1939 and the surrender of Japan on 14 August 1945. Compared to WWI, twice as many Australians served in WWII, doing so in far-flung theatres of war ranging from Western Europe to the South Pacific. From 1942 onward, Australian troops played a decisive role in the Pacific theatre in an attempt to halt Japanese expansion in the region.
