For more than two decades, BrandNet has commissioned original artworks to tell Australian military stories. These paintings became the source of limited-edition prints, medallions, collectables and gifts that found their way into thousands of Australian homes. The original paintings themselves were never sold. They have remained in the BrandNet Archives ever since.
Now, for the first time, the originals are being offered to collectors. Unlike the numbered editions that came after it, the original is not one of a limited edition. It is a true one of one. There is only one original, and once it is sold it leaves the BrandNet Archives and will never be available again.
Then. Now. Always. was commissioned by BrandNet from Australian aviation artist Drew Harrison to commemorate the Centenary of the Royal Australian Air Force on 31 March 2021. Harrison initially explored traditional aviation concepts but concluded that a conventional painting could not contain the breadth of the centenary. His solution was a contemporary triptych in acrylic on canvas: three interconnected one-metre-square panels that operate as one work, giving 100 years of aircraft, people, service and national history room to move from past to present and future.
This artwork was commissioned by BrandNet in 2021.
Forty aircraft spanning the century are woven through the three panels, from the timber-and-fabric types of Point Cook through Second World War, Cold War and Vietnam-era aircraft to the modern F-35A, Wedgetail, Poseidon and Growler. Three aircraft, the P-40 Kittyhawk, F-111 and F-35, receive particular three-dimensional prominence. A single pilot anchors the centre, representing not one individual but the generations of people who flew, maintained, supported and commanded the aircraft. In the pilot’s visor is the reflection of an eagle, linking the modern figure back to the enduring idea of flight.
The structure itself carries meaning. Each panel contains a 10 x 10 grid of 100 squares, quietly repeating the centenary number, with each square individually painted. The narrative begins at Point Cook, birthplace of Australian military aviation in 1914, and moves diagonally upward as sepia tones give way to deep Air Force blue. Roundels, the RAAF crest, Head-Up Display graphics, the Southern Cross and a map of the original Point Cook plan are layered through the composition, connecting institutional heritage with modern technology. The result is neither a chronological chart nor a traditional air-combat scene; it is a visual tapestry of Air Force history that rewards repeated viewing.
The original triptych is the unique source work behind the Centenary limited editions and the wider AF100 collection. Viewed at its full three-metre span, the progression from Point Cook to the future unfolds exactly as Harrison intended, preserving the artist’s hand, detail and texture that no reproduction can match, together with direct provenance to the RAAF Centenary commission.
