For more than two decades, BrandNet has commissioned original artworks to tell Australian military stories. These paintings became the source of limited-edition prints, medallions, collectables and gifts that found their way into thousands of Australian homes. The original paintings themselves were never sold. They have remained in the BrandNet Archives ever since.
Now, for the first time, the originals are being offered to collectors. Unlike the numbered editions that came after it, the original is not one of a limited edition. It is a true one of one. There is only one original, and once it is sold it leaves the BrandNet Archives and will never be available again.
Brothers In Arms is the original 2022 painting by Australian artist Adriana Seserko, created in synthetic polymer paint on Belgian linen as one of the foundation artworks of the Poppy Mpressions collection. Against a brilliant field of yellow, red poppies rise among Australian eucalyptus and New Zealand silver fern. The three botanical symbols tell a larger story: the poppy for remembrance, eucalyptus for Australia and silver fern for New Zealand. The plants are intertwined rather than separated, and it is this detail that gives the artwork its meaning: two nations, different in identity but connected through a shared history of service, sacrifice and mateship.
This artwork was commissioned by BrandNet in 2022.
The poppy’s association with remembrance grew from the battlefields of the First World War, where the flowers flourished in disturbed ground across parts of the Western Front, and was immortalised in John McCrae’s 1915 poem In Flanders Fields. Rather than depicting a particular battle or individual serviceman, Adriana created a symbolic landscape representing the enduring connection between Australia and New Zealand and those who served together. Her approach uses familiar natural forms rather than literal military imagery, so the work can be read at several levels: as a remembrance piece, a celebration of the Australia and New Zealand relationship, or simply as a vivid botanical composition.
Adriana also wrote an original poem to accompany the painting, expressing in words the ideas of standing together, courage, sacrifice and remembrance that she represented visually through the intertwined poppies, eucalyptus and silver fern.
Her distinctive use of strong colour gave the artwork an immediate visual identity that translated across fine-art reproductions, aluminium artworks, numbered medallions, fashion, accessories and gifts, with thousands of Poppy Mpressions products finding their way into Australian and New Zealand homes. The original offers its future owner something no numbered edition can: the artist’s own hand, surface and scale, together with direct provenance to the commercial collection this one painting went on to inspire.
