Original Artwork | F-111: Seek - Strike - Return

The Original Artwork. From the BrandNet Archives

For more than two decades, BrandNet has commissioned original artworks to tell Australian military stories. These paintings became the source of limited-edition prints, medallions, collectables and gifts that found their way into thousands of Australian homes. The original paintings themselves were never sold. They have remained in the BrandNet Archives ever since.

Now, for the first time, the originals are being offered to collectors. Unlike the numbered editions that came after it, the original is not one of a limited edition. It is a true one of one. There is only one original, and once it is sold it leaves the BrandNet Archives and will never be available again.

F-111: Seek, Strike, and Return is the original acrylic on canvas by Australian aviation artist Drew Harrison, and the first work in the Iconic Aviation Collection, the six-painting series commissioned to celebrate aircraft that shaped Royal Australian Air Force history. Two F-111Cs dominate the sky, wings swept and weapons loads visible, above the northern Australian coastline they were acquired to defend. By using two aircraft and a broad landscape, Harrison shifts attention from a single airframe to capability itself: formation, weapons and distance together, the F-111 as a long-range strike system rather than merely an aeroplane.

Few aircraft entered Australian service amid as much controversy, or departed with as much affection. Selected in 1963 to replace the Canberra bomber, the F-111 suffered years of technical problems, rising costs and delay before the first six aircraft finally arrived at RAAF Base Amberley on 1 June 1973. What followed was a remarkable reversal in reputation. With variable-sweep wings, terrain-following radar and the ability to deliver a heavy weapons load at high speed and low altitude, the F-111 became the mainstay of Australian strike power and a regional deterrent unmatched for decades, operated from Amberley by Nos 1 and 6 Squadrons within No. 82 Wing.

Australia never employed the F-111 in an operational strike mission; its strategic value rested on deterrence, though reconnaissance RF-111Cs flew operationally over East Timor in 1999. To the public, ‘The Pig’ became famous for its spectacular dump-and-burn displays. When the final aircraft landed at Amberley on 3 December 2010, the F-111 closed one of the longest and most distinctive chapters in RAAF combat-aircraft history. Harrison presents the aircraft as Australia maintained them for 37 years: armed, trained and ready, a portrait of capability and deterrence.

As the first painting in the series, the original established the visual and historical approach carried through the Hercules, Lancaster, Mustang, Catalina and Sabre commissions, and is the unique source work behind the F-111 limited-edition canvas, paper and aluminium artworks.
