For more than two decades, BrandNet has commissioned original artworks to tell Australian military stories. These paintings became the source of limited-edition prints, medallions, collectables and gifts that found their way into thousands of Australian homes. The original paintings themselves were never sold. They have remained in the BrandNet Archives ever since.
Now, for the first time, the originals are being offered to collectors. Unlike the numbered editions that came after it, the original is not one of a limited edition. It is a true one of one. There is only one original, and once it is sold it leaves the BrandNet Archives and will never be available again.
C-130 Hercules: First and Foremost is the original acrylic on canvas by Australian aviation artist Drew Harrison, from the Iconic Aviation Collection, the six-painting series commissioned to celebrate aircraft that shaped Royal Australian Air Force history. It honours the longest aircraft relationship in RAAF service: when the first C-130A arrived in December 1958, the RAAF became the first operator outside the United States to fly the Hercules, and successive A, E, H and J models have carried Australians ever since.
The Hercules transformed Australian air mobility. It could carry troops, vehicles, equipment and relief supplies over long distances, yet still operate from short and austere airfields. RAAF Hercules supported the Vietnam War with transport and aeromedical evacuation, flew missions in Cambodia, Somalia, Rwanda, Bougainville and East Timor, and from 2003 a detachment operated continuously in the Middle East for years, supporting Australian and coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. Closer to home, the same aircraft have repeatedly responded to bushfires, floods, cyclones and regional humanitarian crises. The painting’s title comes from the motto of No. 37 Squadron, Foremost, today the sole RAAF Hercules operator flying the C-130J-30.
Harrison recognised that the Hercules required a different visual language from a fighter or strike aircraft. Its character comes from scale, endurance and the ability to deliver, so the aircraft dominates the composition through size rather than aggression, its four-engine form and high wing giving the scene visual weight. The surrounding operational environment provides the narrative: the Hercules is presented as part of a larger task, moving personnel, equipment and support, rather than as an end in itself. A Hercules mission is remembered because it brought soldiers home, delivered urgent supplies or reached a community cut off by disaster. Harrison’s composition lets one scene stand for that broader record of service.
The original is the unique source work behind the C-130 Hercules limited-edition canvas, paper and aluminium artworks, and has remained in the BrandNet Archives since the commission.
