For more than two decades, BrandNet has commissioned original artworks to tell Australian military stories. These paintings became the source of limited-edition prints, medallions, collectables and gifts that found their way into thousands of Australian homes. The original paintings themselves were never sold. They have remained in the BrandNet Archives ever since.
Now, for the first time, the originals are being offered to collectors. Unlike the numbered editions that came after it, the original is not one of a limited edition. It is a true one of one. There is only one original, and once it is sold it leaves the BrandNet Archives and will never be available again.
Black Hawk Sunset was created in 2021 by Australian aviation and military artist Drew Harrison as an end-of-service tribute to the Sikorsky S-70A-9 Black Hawk, which served Australia from 1987 to 2021. Painted in acrylic on canvas, it is not a conventional aviation painting. Rather than placing one helicopter in a realistic landscape, Harrison drew on graphic novels, movie posters and even religious art to build a layered portrait of the entire Australian Black Hawk story: the aircraft, the units that operated it, the people who maintained it, the missions it performed and the personnel lost during its service.
This artwork was commissioned by BrandNet in 2021.
At the centre is A25-101 ‘Pegasus’, the first Australian Black Hawk, delivered to No. 9 Squadron RAAF in December 1987 and a participant in the RAAF Centenary Flypast in March 2021, linking the beginning and closing years of the story. Around it sit the Pegasus and warrior of the 5th Aviation Regiment, the armoured horse of the 6th Aviation Regiment, the Australian Army Aviation badge and a Naval Crown referencing No. 9 Squadron. The lower vignettes shift to people and operations: a Queensland flood rescue, tactical rappelling and the RAEME crest honouring the ground crews who kept the aircraft flying.
The work also carries a quieter memorial role. Individual airframes commemorate losses across the fleet’s service, including the 1996 Townsville collision that killed 18 Australian servicemen, as well as aircraft lost on operations and in training, and survivors now preserved at the Army Aviation Museum and the Australian War Memorial.
Across more than three decades, Australian Black Hawks served in Cambodia, Bougainville, East Timor, Fiji, Pakistan and Papua New Guinea, moving soldiers, supporting special operations, evacuating casualties and delivering disaster relief at home. The original painting is the unique source work behind the deliberately small Black Hawk Sunset limited editions, and the definitive artwork of the Australian Black Hawk era.
