We Remember Together. Remembrance Day 2021.
Remembrance Day is Thursday the 11th of November 2021. While the traditions and events may look different this year the importance of this day have never changed.
Remembrance Day marks an important day for Australians to remember those who have died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.
This important day has origins in World War I and marks the day when the guns on the Western Front fell silent. Stretching back to 1919 with the commemoration of Armistice Day following WWI, the name was later changed to fully incorporate and commemorate the enormous sacrifices of all those who have served in armed conflicts.
Remembrance Day Traditions in Australia.
There are many traditions undertaken on Remembrance Day with the most recognisable and poignant for many Australians being the one-minute silence held at 11 am around the country.
The one-minute silence, taken at 11 am, pays tributes to all the servicemen and women who have served and continue to do so in our defence forces. It is a time to remember all those who have died or suffered as a result of war or operations undertaken by our defence forces.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
The Unknown Soldier was a catalyst for the shifting meaning behind November 11th in the post-war years. One of the first unknown soldiers was laid to rest in Westminster Abbey in London on November 11, 1920. The unknown soldier was intended to represent all young men of the British Empire killed during World War I. Australia and many other nations have followed this poignant and significant tradition. The Unknown Australian Soldier was interred in the Hall of Memory at the Australian War Memorial on November 11, 1993, marking the 75th anniversary of the First World War.
The Unknown Australian Soldier honours all Australians killed in war. Commemorate this Remembrance Day and honour those who have served in the past and present.
