The “V’ for victory in this penny remembers 1945 and Australia’s role in defeating tyranny in Europe and in the Asia-Pacific. Between 1939 and 1945 almost one million Australian men and women served in the Second World War, fighting in Europe, the Mediterranean, and North Africa and, after Japan’s entry into the war in December 1941, across the Asia-Pacific.
Germany’s surrender on 7 May 1945 marked the end of fighting in Europe. Japan’s surrender on 14 August 1945 marked the end of the war.
